Photographer: Devesh Uba
Gear: Canon 550D and HTC One

Meet him: http://snapitoga.tumblr.com/

Why I follow: Devesh, in his words, is a 'Traveller from India living the Lagosian adventure." I follow because I get to travel to Lagos without a ticket. The city is vibrant and colorful and Devesh's photography makes it all come to life.

Devesh captures the people, the buildings, the food, the street art, and the life of the people of Lagos. It's been a wonderful journey so far, and Devesh has been an interesting travel companion showing me the sights and sounds of a land far away. I especially love the tiny details he spots, captures and posts... especially the hand-painted art on cars, vans, autos, walls and shop fronts.

Follow him on Instagram, if you like me are a travel enthusiast and would love to see a new place captured so lovingly! :D

My dream is finally taking shape and i am happy to share another Material Girl avatar. Visit Studio Happysong on Facebook and share some love please. It's taken me a long time to get here with many twists, turns and bumps along the way.

PS: The page is a WIP and only about 20% ready. I have lots more to share and will soon by and by. Do share your feedback... I'd love to hear from you.

Don't date a girl who travels...

0 Thoughts / Comments / Views
... or expect her to blog regularly!!

Sorry I have been missing since so long and haven't shown my face to you all... I have been on exciting and some unexpected journeys and work has kept me tied up once i returned.

But i found this post that i wanted to share so here i am...

Read this: Don't date a girl who travels. It could be all about me (except the part about the watch and some other more exciting stuff that the girl who travels can do!)

Meet her: http://artofmob.blogspot.in/

Why I follow: Geri is an iPhoneographer who uses only her iPhone to take pictures and then creates paintings out of them with editing apps. Very interesting, don't you think?

Initially her pictures weren't too much like paintings (interesting nevertheless) but recently her work has just leap-frogged... every picture she posts is a beautiful painting. Follow the Painterly Mobile Artist Geri Centonze on IG or check out her blog; her work is very interesting and very very beautiful. She also shares tips, tricks and sometimes the entire formula of how she created her art (which i don't know how many people would be generous enough to do). She also features the work of other mobile artists on her blog; another reason to go visit if you love mobile art.

Meet him: www.mumbaipaused.com

Why I follow: Gopal chronicles everyday life of a city i have grown to love over the years. Buildings, junkyards, people, fashion, typography, markets, newspapers - it's a fascinating look at a city. It is like walking through a virtual museum that chronicles the different cross-sections of life in the biggest, baddest, maddest city of them all - Bombay.

I am a big fan of: The way he writes. His captions are always interesting and he sometimes writes slightly longer stories that are even more interesting.

Sing a Happysong!

0 Thoughts / Comments / Views
A new year. A new beginning. Happysong. A long burning dream that is slowly taking shape, slowly becoming tangible, slowly becoming real.

There are lots of ideas that have made their home in my heart over the years and i am slowly weaving the various threads into one.

I hope you will support me in this journey.

I kickstarted something. With love. It's taken me a while to get here but now that i am here, i don't want to be anywhere else.

Have a blessed year you all. And may all that you dream become real.

XOXO

A road trip to Belum Caves

0 Thoughts / Comments / Views
I live less than 250 kms from India's second largest cave system and i didn't know about it. Belum Caves is near Kurnool and is a natural cave that is a whopping 3.5 km long (only 1.5 km is open to the public though!).

Raam and I are going tomorrow on a weekend road trip to Belum caves. Wish me luck and a good trip people. (The sky is such a gorgeous blue... this promises to be a good drive for sure, if nothing else!)

And you all have a lovely weekend.

XOXO
Ambica

Of peacock feathers and hearts

0 Thoughts / Comments / Views
Because i shot these two pictures yesterday
Because i am in love with both.
Because they remind me of romance
Even though the heart is quite cheesy.
Because the pictures match.
Because i have work to do about which i am being lazy about.
Because i wanted to share them with you.

XOXO
Have a pretty awesome day!

I love Hyderabad Series: Char Minar Ki Qasam - Char Minar, Mecca Masjid and Laad Bazaar

0 Thoughts / Comments / Views
Faces and places
“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.”
Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky

Char Minar, Mecca Masjid and Laad Bazaar - Being a tourist in my own city.

I don't know how many times i have gone to these places, but i don't tire of the sights and sounds of these places. The crowd, the colors, the noises, the language, the vendors, the food - it's like being transported to another city of another era. And i always find something new every time i go and remember something old from a previous visit.

Char Minar - A guided tour

A lot of people do not go inside the Char Minar, stare up at it from outside and say 'what's the big deal?'. That's a mistake. Buy a ticket and go inside. Sit for a while on the benches set along the perimeter. Look and listen.

Then look for a guide or let one find you and don't spend time bargaining. The Rs 125 that he will charge you is worth it. (Watch the video... and you may agree with me.)

Tall tales: Let the guide take the lead, enjoy his stories and then brace yourself to climb the 54 really horrendous steps to the first floor of the Char Minar. He will tell you more stories, show you the other landmarks of Hyderabad which will look like tiny specks, but it is fun nevertheless! The guide will also take your pictures, even if you don't ask him to!

Say bye-bye to the guide once he has finished showing you around. Stay for a bit and just enjoy the view from atop the Char Minar. Then brace yourself again for the even more horrendous walk down the 54 steps of the circular stairway.

Material Girl Recommends: Look for a photographer when you are back on solid ground again and have regained your breath. You can get a picture taken with the Char Minar in the background. If you have your own camera, he will do the honors for Rs. 5 a shot.

Pause, now's a good time to take a break

There are many places you can find around the Char Minar for a quick bite. There is a Cafe Coffee Day outlet if you don't have a strong stomach. If you are one of the bravehearts (or should i say ironstomach?) you can try any of the local cafes where you can sip on a cup of hot Irani tea and try Osmania biscuits. Try a slice of Dilkhush - a bread with a sweet stuffing, usually cake leftovers and nuts.

We went to Nimra Bakery to rest our feet. The tea was good and not too milky, which is usually the case with Irani tea. We also packed a box of Chand Biscuits to take home.

Material Girl Recommends: The best place to park your car is inside the Lad Bazaar lane. Go inside the lane till the first crossroad, turn left and drive slow till the second left turn. You will find a marketplace with lots of parking space. Walk back to the Char Minar directly and do not get distracted by the shops in Lad Bazaar. You can come back after!

Mecca Masjid

You have to walk through a sea of humanity, barrows and street vendors selling everything from underwear (made as Indonesia) to bangles to clothes to jewelry to hairclips to utensils to guavas to reach the Mecca Masjid.

The guide at Char Minar had told us that the Mecca Masjid fell down 3 times till soil brought from Mecca was used in its construction. The masjid is an imposing stone structure that houses a mosque as well as the remains of the Nizams.

We were, however, distracted by the 200-odd pigeons and the 5 goats who had made the Mecca Masjid their home. You can buy jowar grains from the Ittar Sellers sitting just outside the mosque to feed the pigeons. Or you can just stand there and take a lot of pictures.

We visited the tombs first and were blessed by an old man with poor eyesight who asked me if i was studying in college. (Yeah, that feels good always and i had to preen a bit here. Sorry.)

We walked to the mosque and admired the beautiful red and blue flooring, the tall ceiling and the cloth bags suspended from the ceilings that probably held gorgeous chandeliers. There is also a dirty pool in front of the mosque in the centre of which you will find a very beautiful fountain

A few pictures later we left the mosque and waded through the sea of humanity to go to the Laad Bazaar.

(If you'd like to read more about the Mecca Masjid, then head to Madhu Gopalan's Aadab Hyderabad. You can also watch this NDTV video on YouTube.)

Material Girl Recommends: Always carry a lightweight stole or a shawl in your bag. Useful to cover your head with, if it gets too sunny. Also useful when you visit religious places. I carried one because i knew it would get cold in the evening. Also, wear footwear that is comfortable but also easy to take off and wear again.

PS: You can get a good picture of the Char Minar from the Mecca Masjid from the raised platform just near the entry gate.

Last stop: The shining, dazzling, sparkling, bling of Laad Bazaar or Choodi Bazaar

Laad means lacquer; and laad bazaar has plenty of shops selling lacquer bangles to justify its name. But you can also find so many other things besides laad bangles to shop for. Bangles, bangle boxes, laces, zari borders, rhintestone studded hair barrettes, local perfumes (or ittar), costume jewelry, mehendi, sequins and beads, blingy fans, colorful lungis, fabric, and clothes - you can buy it all here. You will have to like bling, at least a little though, to be able to shop here.

If you are an out-of-towner, and are looking for a keepsake, then you can also find replicas of the Char Minar being sold here. Keep your eyes open and you will find lanes to your left and right where there are more shops selling many more things.

Mera Wala Blue: People bring their new clothes to Laad Bazaar so they can get matching bangles. The shopkeepers will find the exact shade of your dress or sari and make a set of bangles to wear.

Say, if you have a blue dress with pink and white flowers, he will make a bangle set with a lot of blue and a little bit of pink and white and he will place the colors in a beautiful way so that you will never want to separate the bangles and will simply buy new ones even if you need the same shade of blue to match another outfit.

Material Girl Recommends: Evening is a good time to visit Laad Bazaar... the shops are over-lit with too many bulbs, and glow brighter than a bride on her wedding day. It makes for a very pretty sight but it is also more crowded in the the evening and can be a little overwhelming.
Every shopkeeper will ask you to enter his store. It can get a little annoying but don't let that bother you - this is how the place functions. Also, you can bargain. The guide told me to start with 40% and go up to 60% but since i did not have to buy much, i just didn't bother.

The photo walk date with my niece Akansha turned out to be interesting and a lot of fun - she is an excellent travel companion. She has a new found interest in photography and me, in iPhone photography and we hopefully will go someplace again.

Happy Christmas, Doggy Style (no pun intended)

0 Thoughts / Comments / Views
How do you get a rambunctious hyperactive dog to pose with a Santa cap? You don't.

You, instead, chase the dog around and wait for those moments when he holds still for a moment and click.

Happy Christmas. (In advance! I know it's too early but i couldn't keep these pictures to myself!)

Also, you should check this really adorable buzzfeed post called 23 puppies who couldn't wait till Christmas morning. It will make you smile, dog lover or not.

Update: Don't miss the video in the end.

Another Update: I forgot to share this Christmas video of how JetWest Airlines made Christmas special for one planeload of passengers. (Note: If Santa asks you what you want... please don't ask for socks and underwear)

Glimpses of Lucknow

0 Thoughts / Comments / Views
I was in Lucknow for less than 72 hours but i managed to go sightseeing for half a day and also shop! I am super-efficient that ways!! :D

I have been meaning to share some of my pics from that trip... I only took my phone along and all the pictures i clicked were shot using my awesome iPhone4!! :P

Swing-in

0 Thoughts / Comments / Views

This picture is so perfect, it has me sighing. It has this beautiful dreamy-floaty feel. Despite the mismatched colors in the decor (which i love) and the big bold piece of art work behind, the red doors, the bright rug and the bold dress the girl is wearing. Am totally loving it.

{Found this in a very gorgeous blog. You must see the rest of the pictures of swings inside homes and then the rest of the posts too.}

PS: There is a CD stuck in my computer and i can't make it come out. My challenge is hence pending.

20 things about photographing in Manual Mode

0 Thoughts / Comments / Views

I click mostly on manual mode. I have tried to do that ever since i got my camera and learnt to use it a little. I know a lot of people who have fancy cameras and they prefer using it on Auto or Aperture Priority; they believe that the camera is already preset with options so why take the headache...

If you are like me and and are still learning the ropes and want to learn more, this site i came across recently might be of some help. If you are the one-who-only-uses-the auto-mode then this article here may help you get started.

Confession: I can't use manual focus yet, but i will get there someday.

Speedy looks cool

2 Thoughts / Comments / Views
Doesn't he look so stylish with that scarf around his neck?  Not surprising, since he is my designer friend Kedar's dog!

Actually, though, the credit all goes to Shiv Kumar who styled Speedy and took these pictures... maybe, i should take Happy Singh over for a portrait session!

How are you keeping cool this summer? Me, i am trying to keep indoors to stay cool but i know everyone doesn't have that option... so do tell me how are you coping...

{more Speedy here. And yes, Shiv shoots humans too, so leave him a message if you want to look glam in your pics}

PS: While i am writing this the weather just changed to cool!

It's just ink in water. But these photographs clicked by Alberto Seveso are surreal and beautiful and telling me stories. Go see the others and tell me what you think.
