Oh baby!

It starts with one innocuous question... Are you studying?

Which certainly leads on to several more...

Oh you are not studying? What do you do? Where do you work? Are you married? Do you have children? How long have you been married? And then the final shot - Why don't you have children? Is there a problem?

Really? I mean we have just met on the train (or the bus or at a party or at a gathering) and we are strangers. Why do you have to know everything about my life and my life choices?

I hate to be subjected to this kind of aggressive questioning that i encounter every so often. Especially when it comes from random strangers. Even my mother doesn't subject me to this torture nor do my parents in law. My father has never ever asked me once to have children even though i know he loves kids and would love to have a grandchild to dote on / pamper / spoil.

I know of some of my friends who face this as well but i really don't know how to get out of this barrage of questions without seeming rude or ill-mannered. Do you?

{Is that baby sleeping?}

  1. Just turn around and say 'yes, there is a problem... can you help?', and the conversation will most likely take a different, but funny turn where you can then start explaining the iraq conflict and global warming.
