The Oscars had a very global flavor this year - a lot of French (a French director and actor won, and the Cirque Du Soleil performed), a little Spanish (Penelope Cruz presented), a little mandarin and German too (Sandra Bullock spoke in Mandarin with a German Accent), some Iranian (a nomination for Best Picture), and a little Indian too (i watched those silly advertisements while Mr. Rahman performed).
The Awards
Meryl Streep won Best Actress for her portrayal of the Iron Lady, a film based on the life of Margaret Thatcher.
Jean Dujardin won Best Actor for his portrayal of George Valentin in The Artist. The Artist also won the Best Costume, Best Picture, Original Score and Best Director awards.
Octavia Spencer went all teary-eyed and dazed on winning the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for The Help.
Christopher Plummer won the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and also gave imo, the best thank you speech.
Hugo picked up 4 awards - Best Cinematography, Art Direction, Visual Effects, Sound Effects and Sound Mixing. (A movie i need to quickly get my hands on, it looked very magical)
The Descendants won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Woody Allen's A Midnight in Paris won the award for the Best Original Screenplay.
