Presenting the 3rd closet story. This one has been lying in the mailbox since forever (i am super-lazy... you know that by now!).
Meet Sharanya Rao aka Panache_
Sharanya, the fashionista works in a finance company for a living, takes pictures for fun, hordes silver jewelry, applies beautiful mehendi designs when she is bored, reads a lot, loves travel and is a foodie.

And guess what i found in her closet? I found crochet :D

Here's talking to SR, the closet crocheter. She has also shared some resources if you would like to try.

MG: What do you do for a living?

SR: I have an MBA in marketing and finance and I work with a finance company. I know it sounds boring... Believe me it's lot of fun!

MG: Social networking and you... in 30 words

SR: Opens a world of possibilities! You can connect with anyone and everyone who are not accessible in real life. You can represent yourself they way you want and the resources you have access to is mind blowing.

MG: What made you start crocheting?

SR: It started off with SUPW classes in school, mom was very interested in craft...but she didn't have the right resources, I learnt the basics (saw how the teacher moved the crochet needle and wool) and taught mom or tried to teach. She would somehow see to that my project was complete. Voila! I always got an A+ in my knitting and crochet projects :) I don't think I would have got through school without my wonderful mother :) Later when I got working and wanted to have a hobby... I thought why not try something I already know a bit... And it worked! I remembered every stitch I learnt (visually).

MG: I love every single piece of crochet in that collage but the wrap is my favorite! SR, hats off to you for the skill and patience with which you have made the pieces featured here.

MG: What's your favorite color?

SR: It's seasonal! My current favorite is coral... all time favorite is red. When in doubt wear red, I believe in this!

MG: If you could give up what you do and do something else... would you? And what?

SR: I haven't figured out that yet! I have too many ideas running around in my head and somehow I have this difficulty to commit to one idea :) I might be sounding very vague, but right now that's how it is :)

A friend shared a link asking me to check out the photographs knowing i would enjoy them. I did enjoy them. A lot.

But it was Prashant Godbole's pen and ink illustrations that caught my eye and refused to get out of my head. I wish he sold them as art prints or something... I am sure there would be many takers!

{If you have a FB account that is still active, then you can find the illustrations here.}
PPS: I think Mr. Godbole is the only person I know who can't add more friends... (I didn't know there was a friend limit) But yes, you can follow this awesomely talented man.

Since I was already baking a cake, i decided to bake bread too. Yeah, the stupid irresistible urge to bake... Baah!

Baking bread is time consuming and requires a lot of patience what with the waiting for it rise and all... but home baked bread is well worth all the effort you put into it.

This one i found on Haathitime's Hungry and Excited. It's quite simple to make and awesome to eat. I ate the bread just like that... no butter or curry or cheese or olive oil. It was divine just as is. Another winner... I was one lucky gal yesterday... both the recipes i tried turned out simply awesome... Needless to say... I pigged out.
I woke up yesterday with an urge to bake... the kind that refused to shuttup and let me go back to sleep.

So I baked this cake.

The recipe is a winner and it looks like this is going to become my go-to recipe whenever i want to bake a chocolate cake... In fact, there is another one of these baking in the oven right now, while i am typing this and the house smells chocolatey and lovely!!

{It's eggless and also a one-pan cake so less dishes to clean up after. Find the recipe on the Stephanie's JoyofBaking}

PS: I ran out of sugar while baking this yesterday so i substituted brown sugar instead of regular sugar and it still turned out fine! :D

I recently reconnected with Shilpa, a school friend after 2 decadesand we have been bonding over afternoon booze sessions.

She recently invited another school friend Maddy and me over to her home for a marathon baking session. We baked brownies, an orange cake, and two types of bread (my participation was zero and only limited to eating and taking pictures!)

Maddy swears by Stephanie's brownie recipe and honest to God... these were the awesomest brownies I have ever had. Rich and moist and very chocolatey. Divine and guaranteed to take you to food heaven.

If you'd like to make them brownies, head to the Joy of Baking. You can thank me by sending a couple of pieces when you bake them :D

PS: The brownies, unfortunately, are not eggless.

Meet him: http://snapitoga.tumblr.com/

Why I follow: Devesh, in his words, is a 'Traveller from India living the Lagosian adventure." I follow because I get to travel to Lagos without a ticket. The city is vibrant and colorful and Devesh's photography makes it all come to life.

Devesh captures the people, the buildings, the food, the street art, and the life of the people of Lagos. It's been a wonderful journey so far, and Devesh has been an interesting travel companion showing me the sights and sounds of a land far away. I especially love the tiny details he spots, captures and posts... especially the hand-painted art on cars, vans, autos, walls and shop fronts.

Follow him on Instagram, if you like me are a travel enthusiast and would love to see a new place captured so lovingly! :D
Head to Lonely Planet to read Leif Petterson's take on the worst travel advice ever. I agree with all, except... uhm the last one, which seems forced... to maybe increase sales of LP books!

And while we are talking of traveling... head over to The Adventures of Potli Baba, if you'd like to hear what some seasoned travelers have to say about their journeys and their experiences.

Yes, you guessed it right... I am beginning to feel the itch to travel and am getting a little bit antsy right now.
I don't like plain parathas much. I love the stuffed ones the most but it takes a lot of time and effort and i am not willing to spend that much time on cooking often. So I found a simple middle path... jazz the basic paratha with different things at the dough stage itself.

When i am feeling super-lazy, I just add chili powder, cumin and salt to the dough. I have also tried parathas with grated carrots, chopped onions, grated bottle gourd and even beets. The moong dal variant is one of my favorites and also i guess, very nutritious.

{Recipe for 4 parathas}

Soak 1 cup moong dal (green gram - split or whole) overnight or for 6 hours at least. Pressure cook with a little water for 1 whistle. Drain the water and leave the dal in a colander / strainer for a few minutes so that all the water drains out completely and the dal cools down as well.

Now transfer the dal to your mixing bowl. Take a 1 inch square piece of ginger, finely grate it and add. Also add a lot of finely chopped coriander, 1 finely chopped green chili and salt to taste (you will need to add more than you usually add to your plain dough).

Add 1 cup whole wheat flour or multi grain flour to the dal and mix and knead the dough till it comes together. (You may need to add more flour, if you think the dough is still too sticky. But yes, this dough is much softer than the regular paratha dough you make). Add 1 tsp of oil and knead again.

Divide the dough into 4 equal portions. Use lots of dry flour, roll the parathas and cook on a tava with as little oil / ghee or as much as you like :).

Serve hot with curd and pickle.

He is also a foodie and recently tried out camel milk products on his last visit to Bikaner (which he hasn't told me much about, so i am guessing it was really bad!!)

Meet Birju Maharaj, the geek who is a poet as well.
Meet her: http://artofmob.blogspot.in/

Why I follow: Geri is an iPhoneographer who uses only her iPhone to take pictures and then creates paintings out of them with editing apps. Very interesting, don't you think?

Initially her pictures weren't too much like paintings (interesting nevertheless) but recently her work has just leap-frogged... every picture she posts is a beautiful painting. Follow the Painterly Mobile Artist Geri Centonze on IG or check out her blog; her work is very interesting and very very beautiful. She also shares tips, tricks and sometimes the entire formula of how she created her art (which i don't know how many people would be generous enough to do). She also features the work of other mobile artists on her blog; another reason to go visit if you love mobile art.
Kickstarting the series with Divsi Gupta, a girl i first met on Instagram in October and then met her for real on my most recent visit to Bombay in December.

She is the bubbliest and sweetest person i have had the opportunity to meet... we chat often and i have never ever seen her in a foul mood. Divsi is a happy-go-lucky person, who is always gung-ho to start an Instachallenge!

Divsi works with her father and takes care of the marketing of his business. She is also a writer and photographer and has recently started her career as a wedding photographer.

Meet the fashionista without a single mean bone in her body and a lot of shoes in her closet!
Sabudana khichdi is one of my favorite breakfast dishes. It's filling, delicious and a little unhealthy as well - my idea of the perfect breakfast!

And since i made it after a really long time today, i over-indulged!

I like it for You can make it as an evening snack as well.

{Recipe for two}

Soak 1/2 cup sabudana / tapioca pearls for 3 hours. Drain the water completely and let the sabudana sit on a strainer or colander for a few minutes.

Next, crush the peanuts using a mortar-pestle. (I hate doing that so i just use the mixer, taking care to not grind it too fine).

Heat 3 teaspoon oil in a wok. Add 1 teaspoon cumin seeds. When it crackles, lower the flame and add the crushed peanuts. Fry this on a low flame till the peanut starts to brown. Add two-three green chili and 6-7 curry leaves. Stir.

Add 1 chopped potato. Stir. Cover with a lid and leave to cook on low flame. When the potato is cooked, add a chopped tomato. Stir in a little salt. Cover and cook.

Now add the sabudana pearls and salt. Mix and cook on low flame for 3-4 minutes till the sabudana pearls look like they are starting to melt / till that start becoming translucent. Mix 2 teaspoon of ground cumin powder.

Turn the gas off, add chopped coriander. Serve hot.

Do you make sabudana khichdi the same way? My friend Raam's mother makes it in a very different style but that's delicious as well... i will try and find the receipt on her next visit.

Have a lovely week y'all... Hugs!
I once very confidently told my kid cousin that i could NEVER wear anything animal print. And i hadn't. Until recently, that is. When i picked up these ballerina flats from Westside recently because i really liked them. Yes, the shoes are blue and it looks like dots but, the print is most definitely an animal print.
Yes, never say never. Not even in your head.
Meet him: www.mumbaipaused.com

Why I follow: Gopal chronicles everyday life of a city i have grown to love over the years. Buildings, junkyards, people, fashion, typography, markets, newspapers - it's a fascinating look at a city. It is like walking through a virtual museum that chronicles the different cross-sections of life in the biggest, baddest, maddest city of them all - Bombay.

I am a big fan of: The way he writes. His captions are always interesting and he sometimes writes slightly longer stories that are even more interesting.
The BBC adaptation of Sherlock Holmes called Sherlock is, by far, the best i have ever seen.

This version of Sherlock is set in modern times. To me that is the biggest reason for you watch this show in the first place... I can't imagine any other character fitting into our world so beautifully.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Sherlock like he was Sherlock in a previous birth. Martin Freeman plays Watson and is the perfect foil for the mad, charismatic Sherlock.

And yes, Cumberbatch grows on you... that you can't imagine anyone else ever playing this character. And after i think 2 episodes i began to realize that the man is smokin' hot!

Watch Sherlock... it's a very intelligent and interesting show.

A new year. A new beginning. Happysong. A long burning dream that is slowly taking shape, slowly becoming tangible, slowly becoming real.
There are lots of ideas that have made their home in my heart over the years and i am slowly weaving the various threads into one.
How deep fried is your love?

I made these pakodas for lunch yesterday. Yes, i can deep fry anytime. That's how much i love fried food!

All ye health nuts, go away now!

I learnt to make this version of pakodas from my mother who never ever experiments but she did try to this one time and it was a super hit. (Btw, i have a lot of recipes for fries!!)

{Recipe}
I threw in equal quantities of finely chopped carrots, potatoes, beans, cauliflower, american corn kernels, onions and peas and lots of coriander. It was about 2 cupfuls in all.

Add besan / chickpea flour - enough to cover the veggies, about 3 tablespoon, i'd say. Add salt to taste and 1 teaspoon read chili powder. Also add 1 and half teaspoon ginger garlic paste. Add water. Mix.

The mix shouldn't be watery at all... add water little by little till the dough comes together. Heat oil in a iron wok or non-stick frying pan (i prefer the former... it's healthier i think!). Drop small lumps of the batter and fry for a bit in low flame. Raise the flame after a minute or two. Remove when they are golden brown. Serve.

Awesome as is. But you can serve with homemade mint or coriander chutney.

{All my cooking is andaz se / approximate so that's how my recipes posts will be! Sorry!}
Why i follow: I get to see pictures of people and a human side of NY and not just buildings or people walking on a busy street. Finally!

I love this Instaaccount not just for the pictures but for the account of the conversations Brandon has with the people he shoots. (I love listening people who have a funny bone, since i don't have one.) The people in these pics said:

Seen on the Upper West Side

Radhika Prathipati is a very talented artist and a dear friend. Whenever I need wall art for a design project I go to her.

She works with different media including oil, watercolor, and pen and ink. She also has sketched a lot of very interesting and very vibrant faces with color pencils which are my favorite.

Radhika has also recently custom made a painting for a wedding favor for one of my projects. In case you have an interesting project or you need something special for an occasion, she can custom design or create a painting for your requirement.

She recently got some of her artwork printed on cushions and they are beautiful. Here are some of them which i shot with my phone camera. If you'd like to buy them, please send me an email to ambicasrimal@gmail.com. All cushions are priced at Rs. 750 and are 12 inches by 12 inches in size.

PS: She helped me design the lehenga i had got made for my friend's wedding. She is the one whose sense of color and design i like and trust the most.
